Police: Crime typical for Labor Day, football

As Penn State contained the University of Akron on the football field this weekend, police battled Labor Day weekend crowds and students eager to take advantage of a three-day weekend.

Despite Labor Day weekend coinciding with the first home football game of the season, police said crime was on par with past years.

"We didn't have as many incidents as I thought we were going to have," Penn State Police Sgt. Don Hazel said. "The football game went OK."

But after the game ended, criminal activity continued. With a noon kickoff, fans had plenty of time after the game to get in trouble, Hazel said.

Official statistics from the State College Police Department were not available by press time and will be released this afternoon, police said. But there were a few notable incidents from the weekend.

A 2001 Chevrolet Camaro was stolen and stripped at 11:35 a.m. Sunday from 425 Locust Lane, State College police said.

Tires, speakers and a stereo system were taken from the secured vehicle, police said. It was found on Rock Road.

Police said they have no suspects, and the case is currently under investigation.

Fights were also an issue downtown this weekend.

A man was punched in the face by an unknown man at 1:52 a.m. Friday on 420 E. College Ave., State College police said.

The man was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center. A suspect has not been identified, police said, and officers could not confirm if either man is a student or release their ages.

Another downtown fight led to a man breaking his arm after being shoved down the steps of Pita Pit, 218 E. Calder Way, at 1:49 a.m. Friday, the State College Police Department said.

Police could not confirm if either man is a student or release their ages.

A man was charged with burglary after he broke into another man's apartment and assaulted him at 2:16 a.m. Sunday, State College police said.

Zachary G. Hess, 19, of Nescopeck, Pa., kicked open an apartment door at 340 E. Beaver Ave. and punched a man in the face twice, police said.

Hess is charged with burglary, criminal trespass, underage drinking and other related summary offenses, police said.

The most common crimes this weekend included underage drinking, drug law violations and DUIs, Hazel said.

Patton and Ferguson Township Police Departments conducted aggressive driving enforcement details along Vairo Boulevard and Valley Vista Drive. Authorities issued 31 traffic citations Thursday in four hours, police said.

Labor Day weekend definitely contributed to the weekend's activity, Hazel said.
