Women's soccer shutout in upset loss to Rutgers

The No. 13 Penn State women's soccer team failed to score a goal for the first time this season in a 1-0 loss to unranked Rutgers Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lions (2-3) managed only three shots on goal in the entire contest after recording 30 shots in their last home game against UCONN.

Rutgers' Ashley Jones dribbled around three Lion defenders to net the game-winner with six minutes and 12 seconds left in the match. Jones also scored the game-tying goal last season when the Scarlet Knights (3-0-1) knocked the Lions out of the NCAA Tournament. Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks gave credit to the Lions in a "hard-fought, college soccer game" and said his players were "elated" after the match.

After the game, Lions coach Erica Walsh questioned her team's mentality, saying she wants them to learn to utilize their internal killer instinct. She said she knows the players have that instinct in them, because they answered a UCONN goal with two consecutive goals last weekend to propel them to victory.

Senior Katie Schoepfer admitted that her teammates were beat up and tired after a hectic travel schedule back to State College from Tallahassee, Fla., following their loss to Florida State on Friday night.
