Lions down Lock Haven with strong second half

Despite a slow start to its first home game of the season, the Penn State field hockey team kept fighting.

After falling behind 1-0 with 15 minutes and 38 seconds remaining in the first period, the team had what head coach Char Morett called a "reality check."

In the second period the Lions responded with three unanswered goals, good enough to give them a 3-1 win over the visiting Lock Haven Bald Eagles.

"I was obviously not pleased with our effort in the first half," Morett said. "I said to the team, 'one of our goals is to out hustle the other team and right now we are getting out hustled on our home field, and that's just unacceptable.'"

The team appeared much more energized in the second period as it was all over the field fighting for balls. The Lions finished with 15 shots on goal, six of which came from red-shirt freshman Hannah Allison.

Allison notched the Lions' first score of the game when she launched a shot around the goalie right near the cage. Nearly 14 minutes later she struck again, this time finding the lower left corner off a penalty corner with the assist coming from Amy Bonenberger and Christine Dudek. The Lions managed to record 10 penalty corners during the game.

"We only really hustled for 35 minutes, and that was in the second half," Allison said. "We wanted the win so I guess it took us a half to get ready for it, but we did it."

The Lions' other goal came from junior Daneen Zug, who hit the ball into the left corner of the cage on an assist from Allison. It was Zug's first goal of the season.

While Morett said she felt the defense was vulnerable to the Bald Eagles' attack at times, she thought it did a nice job of transferring the ball. The Lions' defense was aided by goalkeeper Ali Meves' eight saves. Meves kept her team in the game and had six of her eight saves in the first period.

The Lions look to notch their second win of the season at noon on Sunday when they host No. 5 University of Connecticut.
