Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Brandon Ware will be out for about month after breaking a foot during practice on Monday, head coach Joe Paterno said during his Tuesday press conference.
The 6-foot-3, 341 pound tackle suffered the injury while running and changing direction, Paterno said.
Penn State sports information director Jeff Nelson confirmed Ware injured his right foot.
"Dr. [Wayne] Sebastianelli said to me he'll be out at least three to four weeks, which probably means four to five, I guess."
Ware was listed as the backup left defensive tackle to Jared Odrick on Penn State's depth chart for the season opener this Saturday.
Wallace may play
Cornerback A.J. Wallace won't start, but he may still find time on the field against Akron this Saturday.
"I had put some rules down, that he had to get certain grades, which he got in the summer time," Paterno said. "I put some other rules down and he's abided by them. He may end up playing some on Saturday."
The announcement came after the coach said during media day last month that the cornerback might not play for a couple games because he cut English classes during the first summer session.
Wallace, a senior, played in 13 games last season and had 20 tackles. He is listed as the backup left corner behind Knowledge Timmons on the Nittany Lions' depth chart for Saturday's game.
