Senate hopeful to hold Q & A

U.S. Representative and Senate hopeful Joe Sestak will be holding a question-and-answer session in the HUB on Thursday, according to a Penn State College Democrats representative.

Sestak, who has announced he will run in 2010 against the Republican-turned-Democrat Sen. Arlen Specter, will be holding the session from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. in HUB 129B and C, said Christian Zeme (senior-secondary education), the administrative vice president of the Penn State College Democrats.

Those who attend the meeting and would like to ask a question will be given a numbered card at the door, and Sestak will choose the card numbers at random to answer the questions, Zeme said.

"I am very much looking forward to the visit and to hearing his platform in person," said Samantha Miller (senior-political science), who plans to work with other students to promote Sestak in his bid for the Senate.

"Hearing things about his social policies and social standards would be most important for distinguishing himself from Sen. Specter as a Democrat," she said.

Penn State College Democrats, who arranged the meeting, say they're bringing Sestak to campus in order to help students understand his political positions when it comes time to cast their vote.

Zeme said the College Democrats are also actively trying to arrange an event with Specter, who has served in the contested Senate seat for five terms.

Prior to the event, Sestack will be spending the earlier part of the day at the Grange Fair in Centre Hall.

He will follow the meeting on campus by being the featured speaker at the Centre County Democrats' Fall Dinner at the Atherton Hotel, 125 S. Atherton St., chairwoman Dianne Gregg said.

Sestak will experience the "widest exposure to have in Centre County in one day's trip," Gregg said.

Gubernatorial candidate Jack Wagner and five statewide judicial candidates will also be at the dinner, Gregg said.

Those who wish to attend the dinner should register by noon today at the Centre County Democrats' Web site, centrecountydems.com.
