After having the worst record in the New York-Penn League in 2008, the State College Spikes are closing in on a major milestone--the playoffs.
The Spikes have only 13 games left and are one of five teams within four games of the final playoff spot.
Monday night the Spikes split a double header with the Batavia Muckdogs and are now just
3.5 games out of the Wild Card race.
"The Wild Card race is definitely in the back of our mind," second baseman Ty Summerlin said. "We just need to take it one game at a time and we know we have some important games coming up."
While the team is not mathematically eliminated from the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division race, it trails Mahoning Valley by 3.5 games. With three teams in front of them in the divisional race, the Spikes' best opportunity to make the playoffs comes via the Wild Card.
Of the Spikes' remaining 13 games, six of them are against the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Crosscutters are 1.5 games out of the Wild Card race and also trail the Oneonta Tigers and the leading Staten Island Yankees.
These two critical series will give the Spikes the opportunity
to make up ground in the tight race.
