Hearing for PSU student delayed

The preliminary hearing for a Penn State student charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman at a downtown apartment was rescheduled for Aug. 5.

Centre County Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane said the hearing was postponed because he is seeking "another witness."

On March 28 at about 4 a.m., the woman awoke in the bed of a Hamilton Avenue apartment wearing no shorts or underwear and with Murad Hanif awake next to her, according to court documents.

Confused, she walked to the bathroom, felt vaginal pain and began "to realize she was sexually assaulted," according to the affidavit.

The woman told authorities "she never provided consent," was "unable to act or say no" and was "unsure if she had anything to drink or smoke," according to the affidavit.

She ran out of the apartment, was followed down a flight of stairs by Hanif, who turned around when she knocked on another resident's door, according to court documents.

Whoever answered the door notified authorities, and Hanif, 25, faces one felony count of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault, according to court documents.

The neighbor accompanied the woman back to the apartment to retrieve her belongings, and a male opened the door, threw her cell phone back to her and shut the door, police said.

Hanif's friend was in the apartment some time during the night of incident, according to the affidavit.

Hanif told police he did not remember bringing a woman to the apartment and was not sure if he had sex, according to court documents.

Police searching the apartment found the woman's brown sandals hidden under clothing in a suitcase, police said.

The woman was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for a Sexual Assault Response Team interview and sexual assault examination, police said.

DNA tests from the examination were consistent with Hanif's oral sampling and the woman's vaginal samplings, according to court documents.

Hanif was arrested and taken to the Centre County Correctional Facility July 1, but was released on $50,000 bail the next day.
