LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Commonwealth Campuses should have shot at tickets

In response to Jeannine Rahner Piotrowski's July 7 letter, "Student ticket sales system still needs a bit of tweaking," it was completely unnecessary to mention that main campus students should be given priority over Commonwealth (not branch) Campuses and start this pointless debate, but I feel that something should be said.

Obviously you were upset that your son did not get tickets for this season, but I have no idea what gives you the right to say that main campus students should have priority over commonwealth students. If you personally feel that way based on the fact that they live up there, then you might as well give priority for tickets to every State College resident and all residents in the surrounding area and keep expanding that area until Beaver Stadium fills up. As a result, the majority of students, if not all, living in the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia area and out of state will get nothing at all. Commonwealth Campus students are Penn State too and they should continue to have the same chance as a main campus student for future ticket sales.

Trucks parked on sidewalk put pedestrians in danger

Recently, there were two large trucks parked over sidewalks along the road that runs along the HUB-Robeson Center. The Herr's truck was nearly covering the entire width of the sidewalk. The other truck was taking up less of the sidewalk, but it was still covering at least half the sidewalk. Two people would have to go down to single file to stay on the sidewalk and get past that truck. I, of course, walked in the middle of the road to get past each of them. When a vehicle is on the pedestrians' sidewalk, I use its road.

Here's what the second truck had written on it, roughly: Penn State Environmental Health and Safety -- Keeping Penn State Safe.

How's that for ironic? The safety people forcing pedestrians out into the road.

Why do vehicles have the "right" to take part of our sidewalks, when there's road space a-plenty for them? When will you get the trucks, cars, etc. off of the sidewalks and let the pedestrians have them all to themselves?

How is someone with a large assisstive device (such as a wheelchair) supposed to get around that "safety" truck? Plus, why should anyone have to get around a truck on the sidewalk?
