Coaches' brother joins Lions

Cyler Sanderson has officially transferred from Iowa State to the Penn State wrestling program and is enrolled in classes for the fall semester at Penn State.

Sanderson -- who will be a senior -- will join his brothers, Cael and Cody who are the head coach and associate head coach at Penn State respectively. Both elder Sandersons were previously coaches at Iowa State.

Current Penn State 165-pounder Dan Vallimont has wrestled Cyler Sanderson since high school and is looking forward to the former Cyclone joining the Nittany Lions.

"I think he's a great addition," Vallimont said. "He's a great wrestler and he has a lot to offer our program."

Last season, Cyler Sanderson went 11-2 in the dual meet season. Of his victories, five of them were major decisions. He also recorded one technical fall and one pin during the regular season. His losses gave up only seven total points for the Cyclones.

Cyler Sanderson also finished fourth in the 157-pound weight class last season at the Big 12 Championships. He was a 2008 All-American when he placed seventh in the NCAA Championships that year.

The 157-pounder will enter Penn State with an overall record of 82-26.

"I'm feeling pretty confident with our roster for next season," Vallimont said. "We've been training hard for awhile now and the new guys are looking really tough, I'm really grateful we got some of those transfers. We're slowly getting to know each other. It's looking good."

Vallimont said Cyler Sanderson spent all of last week training with the rest of the Lions. However, with the NCAA's strict rules on transferring, the senior is not able to work at the Penn State wrestling camps during the summer, so he is spending most of his time training at the Iowa State facilities.

While Cyler Sanderson was in town, Vallimont said the two trained hard together.

He said Cyler Sanderson will be helpful to the middle weight wrestlers this year as he pushes his teammates during practice and in the weight room. Sophomore Frank Molinaro agreed, saying the former Cyclone will act as a role model on the team.

"He's a really good wrestler and he brings a lot," sophomore Frank Molinaro said. "He works really hard too and I think a lot of people will be able to feed off of him. He's got everything on the right track. He's a good person to look up to."

Along with adding Cyler Sanderson to the roster, the Lions also recruited seven incoming freshmen who have helped to rank Penn State as the No. 6 team in the nation by Intermat entering the season.

"On paper we look really good," Molinaro said. "I think we're gonna have a really good chance to make a run this year which I think a lot of people weren't expecting. If we continue to wrestle up to our potential this year we can have a shot at really placing high."
