Spikes take out 'Cutters

Spikes shortstop Brock Holt kicked off the offensive attack.

With a leadoff single in the top of the first inning Holt set the standard for which the rest of the team followed.

Behind three more singles in the inning, the State College Spikes scored three runs to jump out to an early lead over the host Williamsport Crosscutters.

After shelling pitcher Jonathan Pettibone (1-1) for six runs in three innings, the Spikes (9-8) continued their offensive dominance. The ensuing pitchers would not fare much better as the Spikes posted 16 hits in their 11-3 win over the Crosscutters (9-8).

Spikes players were not made available for comment after the game.

The win marks the first time since Aug. 21, 2007 that the Spikes are over .500. The 16 hits in the game were also a season high as the team's winning streak now extends to four games.

The Spikes welcomed Andy Vasquez back to the starting lineup after missing the past three games with shin splints. Vasquez returned to the field playing third base while Holt remained at shortstop.

Vasquez didn't take long to find his swing as he hit a double to left field in his first at bat.

The Spikes offensive production was a team effort as each player in the lineup reached base and

scored. A main reason for the offensive success was left fielder Edward Garcia. Garcia went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and is now batting .279 on the season.

After the Spikes six runs posted over the first three innings, the team managed to set another season record in the seventh inning.

When designated hitter Justin Byler reached first base on a throwing error by third baseman Anthony Hewitt, it set up what would become a five-run Spikes inning. Taking advantage of Hewitt's three errors in the inning, the Spikes were able to extend their lead to 11-2.

The Spikes also received support from their four pitchers who combined for eight strikeouts and issued only two walks. Phillip Irwin (1-0) entered in relief for starter Jason Erickson in the fifth inning and gave up one hit in his two innings of work.

With the Spikes already securing the series win, they will look for the sweep at 7:05 p.m. Monday when they return to Bowman Field.
