Make most of college by getting involved

Three years ago, I hated freshman move in day.

I was convinced there was no way I'd be able to fit everything from the stuffed-to-the-seams SUV into a tiny dorm room.

I was nervous about the first day of classes. I was unsure about my floor-mates. And I had no idea what I'd be doing when I began my senior year.

Turns out, classes went well, my floor-mates became friends, and I made it to senior year.

But if you're a freshman who just moved in, I know how you feel. Penn State is a huge, intimidating place -- especially when you're far from home.

So let me formally introduce to you (or for the upperclassmen, reintroduce you to) your newspaper, The Daily Collegian.

We'll be here every day to tell you what's happening on campus and downtown. We'll tell you which movies are great which new music releases aren't worth your money. We'll keep you up to date on Penn State athletics. We'll visually capture life here in State College. We'll post breaking news on our Web site, www.psucollegian.com.

If you don't like what's going on in Happy Valley, in the nation or in the world -- or if you do -- write us a letter to the editor. We'd love to have you become part of the conversation.

And if you're aspiring to join us as a Collegian reporter, come to tryouts tomorrow, Thursday, July 2. Stop by anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. for the rolling tryouts, but don't be late because doors close at 4 p.m. sharp.

There's one way to make this campus smaller. That's by joining an organization you care about. If journalism is the thing that gets your heart thumping, The Daily Collegian could be the place for you.

Find an organization you're passionate about, and you'll soon find that three years have whizzed past.

Just this weekend, I witnessed the freshman move in adventure in front of Atherton Hall. The SUVs with four way flashers on, the parents loaded down with bags of stuff their son or daughter probably won't need, the looks of nervousness and uncertainty on the fresh-faced freshman -- it really brought back some memories.

This time, it was nice to be on the outside looking in. This time, I noticed that along with the uncertainty was so much potential and excitement for the next four years.

If you want to use your potential to help us put out our newspaper everyday, we'd love to have you tryout.

We hope to see you there.
