Senior football tickets don't sell out, sale operating smoothly

Senior student season football tickets did not sellout Monday and junior tickets were still available hours after Tuesday's sale opened in the first year of paperless student tickets.

The Ticketmaster Web site has been operating quickly and the purchasing process has gone "as smoothly or even smoother" than expected, said Penn State Associate Athletic Director Greg Myford.

"I think that's primarily from the student body having a year under it's belt, so to say, with this process and being a little bit more used to how it works," Myford said.

While the purchasing process is the same, Myford believes the change from paper tickets to storing game tickets on student ID cards has cut down on the number of students buying tickets with the intention of making a resale profit.

"What we're doing is making some great strides in eliminating the scalping of student tickets," he said. "What we're most pleased with is the students who were buying tickets and trying to post them on eBay 15 minutes later, that part of the population has been eliminated from the student ticket process."

In years past, there were postings on the site of students putting their tickets for sale with large markups just moments after ticket sales closed. Through the first two days of student sales, there was not one entry on eBay for Penn State student season football tickets.

Penn State has yet to announce the process of reselling and transferring tickets to another student's ID card.

No official ticket sale number was released but Myford said there were some tickets that weren't sold when the senior sale closed at 2 p.m. Monday, and the junior sale was still open when he was reached for comment Tuesday. However, the majority of tickets were sold, he said.

Last year, it took the senior class eight hours to purchase all the tickets, while the junior tickets sold out about 90 seconds after the sale opened.

A percentage of the approximately 22,000 student tickets, based on the size of each class, are being sold each day this week. Seniors were allotted about 25 percent of the tickets and about 29 percent were available to the junior class, which includes fourth-year students who do not have the 91.1 credits needed for a senior ticket. The remainder of the tickets will be sold throughout the week, with sophomores Wednesday and freshmen Thursday each getting about 23 percent each. Graduate student tickets go on sale Friday.

While there are three days remaining in the sale, Myford is confident that the scalping issue has been curbed for now.

"The real positive in that is now we know that every student who participates is a student who wants a ticket with the purpose of coming to the game," he said.
