Friends remember PSU students killed in car accident

"Always smiling," "friendly" and "extremely well-liked" are just a few of the ways friends described Penn State students Jonathan Quigley and Emily Trump.

Quigley and Trump, both members of the Schreyer Honors College, died as the result of a car accident June 6 on Fox Hollow Road in Carroll Township, Pennsylvania State Police at Newport said.

Michael Russo, a friend of Quigley's, remembered some of the many qualities he said attracted everyone to his friend.

"Jon was undeniably one of the nicest and most charismatic guys I've ever met," Russo (sophomore-finance) said. "When I met him, I knew he had a really bright future. He had that drive and determination."

Police said Quigley, 19, and Trump, 18, both of Mechanicsburg, were traveling westbound with driver Gregory Bretz, 19, also of Mechanicsburg, when Bretz' 1994 Ford Ranger veered to the left at about 6:10 a.m. The vehicle then crossed the eastbound lane of traffic, traveled off the road, and ran over some bushes before hitting a tree head-on, police said.

Quigley, who was an on-campus representative for University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA), was pronounced dead at the scene by Perry County Coroner Michael Shalonis, police said.

UPUA President Gavin Keirans said Quigley, a sophomore who was majoring in international affairs and communications, was a leader and wanted to be involved with the organizatin since the beginning of his freshman year at Penn State.

"He was really one of the up-and-coming people of UPUA," Keirans (senior-business management). "We'll have to figure out a way to honor his memory though UPUA and the student body."

Trump died later that day after she and Bretz sustained major injuries and were taken by ambulance to the Life Lion Critical Care helicopter, where they were flown to Hershey Medical Center, according to the police report. Officials at Hershey Medical Center said Bretz was treated and released.

Laura Karp lived across the hall from Trump (sophomore-political science and economics) last year and became close friends with her as the year progressed, she said. Karp said Thursday she was planning to speak Friday at Trump's funeral, and as she and other friends gathered to compile their memories of Trump, they found it difficult to find a "serious moment."

"She was a total goofball. She'd always go out of her way to make you smile," Karp (junior-biobehavioral health) said.

Karp said Trump had the ability to light up a room just by entering it and she never failed to entertain her friends with a song or dance she had made up. Trump was a total magnet for everyone she met, Karp said.

"She had a radiant smile and a positive attitude. She made you want to be around her," Karp added.

Trump and Quigley were both involved with the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. Both families are asking that donations be made to Quigley and Trump's respective Thon organizations.

Russo was a member of Atlas Thon with Quigley, and he said he was sure "Thon was the most important thing to him."

Karp and Trump were members of Springfield Thon together, and as a dancer this past year, Karp said she remembers Trump visiting her on the floor to help keep her spirits high.

Trump shared her infectious humor with everyone she knew, whether it was providing morale during a rainy powder-puff football practice or smiling through a day of exams, Karp said. She added Trump and her roommate had pictures of themselves all over the walls of their dorm room.

"She loved to capture every joyful moment," Karp said. "It's a blessing they have the evidence."

Police said the cause of the accident is still being investigated. Police are also investigating whether alcohol played a role in the accident. Neither of the passengers nor the driver was wearing a seatbelt, police said.
