Two Penn State coaches and one game-winning shot are the three Penn State entries nominated for the 2008-09 Big Ten Network's Awards.
Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is nominated for Men's Coach of the Year after leading the Nittany Lions to an 11-2 finish, the program's second Big Ten Championship in four years and a berth in the Rose Bowl. He is nominated along with Michigan State men's basketball coach Tom Izzo, Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz, Michigan State men's soccer coach Joe Baum and Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands.
Penn State Women's volleyball coach Russ Rose is nominated for Women's Coach of the Year after the team completed a 38-0 season and captured a second consecutive national championship. The other nominees are Ohio State women's basketball coach Jim Foster, Northwestern women's tennis coach Claire Pollard, Illinois women's gymnastics coach Bob Starkell and Northwestern women's lacrosse coach Kelly Amonte-Hiller.
The other Penn State nominee is men's basketball point guard Talor Battle's March 5 game-winning shot with 0.3 seconds remaining to beat No.23 Illinois. Battle's shot is one of 12 nominees for the Big Ten's best finish award.
All three awards involving Penn State are decided by fan vote. Fans can go to gopsusports.com or bigtennetwork.com to vote. The awards will air June 19 on the Big Ten Network.
