Penn State men's tennis assistant coach Dan Holman is leaving the team after his fourth season in Happy Valley.
Holman will take the position as Director of Tennis at the Westport Club in Denver, NC.
"I can say it was hard, a real hard decision" Holman said. "I really thought about it for a long time."
Under two different head coaches, Holman helped lead the Penn State team to several of its best seasons in the programs history and a combined 63-38 record.
An Atlanta, Ga., native, Holman was also named the 2008 ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in May of last year.
Holman is proud of what the Nittany Lions accomplished during his four-year tenure. Whether it was making the NCAA Tournament three out of four years or finishing with the highest ranking in program history in 2008, he said coaching at Penn State is something he is definitely going to miss.
"I can always look back and say we have done things in my time here that had never been done before and I'm definitely going to miss that. I'm very proud of what we were able to accomplish. I felt like when I got here, Penn State tennis was good but I felt like we've helped put Penn State tennis on the map."
Head coach Todd Doebler said Holman did a great job at Penn State as a great coach and great mentor for the players on and off the court.
"We're definitely sad to see him go but I'm really happy for him because it's a great opportunity," Doebler said.
Doebler was unsure of who will be hired as Holman's replacement and said the athletic department will do a national search to fill the position.
Doebler also said he spoke to last year's senior co-captain Brendan Lynch -- who has considered going into coaching at the collegiate level -- but thinks Lynch should get some experience elsewhere and possibly make room for a return to Penn State sometime in the future.
"I don't want to rule it out," Doebler said. "But I think it's a small chance."
