Songs capture Penn State experiences

I'm infamous for my mixed CDs. One,

for the fact that I still make mixed CDs, and two, because the playlists have no rhyme or reason -- the songs on any given one could range from Broadway to Eminem to Cyndi Lauper.

But they're who I am, so I've decided to make a mixed CD for my time at Penn State; a sort of compilation of advice for you lucky people who get to stay here, and sappy nostalgia from four of the best years of my life.

"Kernkraft 400," Zombie Nation

If you weren't there, you can't imagine what the 2005 Penn State football season was like. This was when Paul Posluszny was just a hard name to pronounce, before D-Will stopped and avoided the tackle when any other person would have kept running, before those two extra seconds that broke the hearts of fans across the nation.

I'm not a huge fan of watching sports, but that season made me love football, love Penn State, and love every single person who felt the same way.

Bottom line: Go to all the games you can.

Brave the sun, the sleet, the drunken disorderly fans, the ridiculous prices, the crowds -- even cherish every bruised rib from squeezing in the 17 extra people on a bench that should hold 10 fewer than they assign to it. Go early, stay late.

"Don't Worry, Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin

I was never stressed before I came here. Then I got a job where I not only worked 30 hours a week, but was also fu lly responsible for making sure there were no errors in the newspaper. There have been mornings when I didn't want to get out of bed for fear that a typo slipped into a caption on the front page, or we misspelled a headline.

Both have happened, and life went on. Learn from your mistakes, but don't let stress take over your life. Whether it was that test you didn't quite study hard enough for, the text you didn't really want to send at 3 a.m., eating that extra slice of Canyon or putting a wrong version of the story into the paper -- just try to be better the next day. Don't worry all of your college away ... be happy.

"Single Ladies," Beyonce

As a die-hard hopeless romantic, I realize how wonderful relationships are. But never underestimate the beauty of being a single lady in State College.

"Just Dance," Lady GaGa

Here's something from me to you: Dancing will always make you feel better. Not the grinding groin to groin that people pass off as dancing, but the pure-joy-movement that is so innate babies do it as soon as they can stand. Flail and spin and twirl (and guys I'm talking to you too) and don't worry about looking foolish.

The best nights I've had during my illustrious party career here have been spent dancing.

"Thank You," Dido

Don't ever forget to give thanks to the people who got you where you are (Mom, Dad and Dana), the ones who keep you sane (you know you did, Mar) and the ones who stick by you even when life gets busy (Angie, Amanda, Jessie and Donny).

So there's my playlist -- take it and add to it.
