UPUA to air loop's plan

The student government will discuss its proposal for a greek loop tonight.

Members of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) will see a more concrete plan of the greek loop at tonight's assembly meeting.

A presentation of the proposal for the bus service, which will be called the "highlands loop," will be given at the meeting in an attempt to gain support from the UPUA assembly, UPUA special consultant Andrew Karasik said.

Karasik (sophomore-political science) said members of the assembly may question the purpose of the loop, thinking it is a way to get students to go to fraternity events, but the true intentions of UPUA President Gavin Keirans' concept is to instill safety on campus, Karasik said.

Keirans, Interfraternity Council President Luke Pierce and other members of UPUA have been meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in an effort to extend bus services to go from Fraternity Row to all the residence halls, Keirans (junior-business management) said.

"The key is to really promote the idea of safety, especially later hours in badly lit areas ... especially young women having to walk home from all these off-campus events," Keirans said.

Pierce could not be reached for comment as of press time Tuesday.

Also at tonight's meeting, Matt Smith will be nominated for the UPUA chief of staff, Keirans said. Earlier in the semester, Smith (junior-international politics) ran for UPUA vice president with presidential candidate Samantha Miller (junior-politcal science). The Miller-Smith ticket came in second to Keirans and Hillary Gupta.

Keirans said Smith will work with him and the other members of the executive board to ensure the various directors on staff are working together to achieve their goals.
