Iowa State's head coach Cael Sanderson accepted an offer to become the head wrestling coach at Penn State on Friday, according to a press release by the athletic department.
After a week of searching and interviewing candidates to replace Troy Sunderland, the Nittany Lions have hired the most successful wrestler in the history of college wrestling. Sanderson was an ESPY award in 2002 for the Best Male College Athlete, after capping off an undefeated career and four NCAA titles, the only wrestler ever to accomplish the feat.
Sanderson, 29, has coached Iowa State to three straight top-5 finishes at the NCAA Tournament. The Lions finished 19th at this year's national tournament.
"It's exciting for the program," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said in a telephone interview Friday afternoon.
Sanderson will be introduced at a press conference at 2 p.m. on Monday at Rec Hall. The event is open to the public, according to the press release.
