Police investigate assault at Cell Block

Police are investigating an assault at The Cell Block, 420 E. College Ave., that happened early Thursday morning, the State College Police Department said.

A woman was hit in the face with a champagne bottle at about 2:07 a.m. by an unknown person, police said.

She was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center with chipped teeth and a bloody nose, police said.

Band to make first local appearance

Pittsburgh-based band Gramsci Melodic is set for its first local performance at 10 p.m. at the Gingerbread Man, 130 Hiester St.

The band's music can be described as alt-funk, and it has been compared to bands ranging from Fountains of Wayne to Rogue Wave.

A portion of the money raised from the event will go to the Make it Right Foundation in conjunction with HRIM 497A (Meetings and Events I).

Earth Day to sprawl out over HUB lawn

Music, tie-dye and environmental awareness will take over the HUB lawn from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday as part of the 39th annual Earth Day Festival.

The event, sponsored by Eco-Action and funded by the University Park Allocation Committee, will also feature several speakers, free bicycle tune-ups and giveaways, said Eco-Action public relations representative Tina Robinson.

There will also be a light bulb exchange where participants can bring their used iridescent light bulbs to trade-in for new compact fluorescent bulbs that are more energy efficient, Robinson said.

In keeping in the tradition of sustainable living, energy for the festival will be provided exclusively by a solar panel generator provided by the Penn State Engineers for a Sustainable World, Robinson added.
