Greeks compete for crown

Matt Swingle of Tau Kappa Epsilon and Gabrielle Williot of Delta Zeta were crowned Mr. and Miss Greek Week 2009, at the Greek Week pageant in Paul Robeson Cultural Center's Heritage Hall Wednesday night.

"I'm really excited and completely shocked," Williot (sophomore-journalism) said. "But I'm happy to represent the greek community."

Swingle (junior-finance) was equally excited, saying he hoped his new title would help with recruiting new members.

"I definitely did not see it coming," he said. "It was a blast and win or lose it was still a fun time."

Ten contestants -- 5 men and 5 women -- were chosen through an application process to compete in the pageant.

There were three categories -- toga, talent, and question and answer.

"The purpose of the pageant is to get everybody from different organizations that are really dedicated to greek life to really show off their knowledge, show what they can do and hopefully win Mr. and Miss Greek Week," said Greek Week programming overall Alyson Stercula.

During the toga competition, each contestant donned homemade togas to represent their Greek pride.

The talent competition ranged from opera singing to logrolling and had no shortage of enthusiasm from the crowd of over 400 people.

Ian Davis (sophomore-engineering) of Phi Kappa Delta showed everyone "how to rave" with a series of dance moves based on everyday tasks like picking apples and milking a cow.

Swingle sat down at the piano to play Beethoven, but it didn't last long.

"I'm not going to bore you all night," Swingle said adding he would play his original pieces -- a mixture of the classics and rap.

As Swingle tickled the ivories, the crowd began to recognize the popular songs such as "Don't Matter" by Akon

The first question went to Davis: "What do you think is the worst greek stereotype?"

Davis said his least favorite stereotype is that all greeks do is party and binge drink, adding it isn't true.

"There are so many ways greeks get involved with the community in service and philanthropy," he said. "There are so many opportunities that you couldn't get elsewhere."
