Macy strikes out 12 but baseball falls to complete-game performance

Assessing the opposing pitcher, Robbie Wine said the performance was "pure guts."

The Penn State baseball team lost, 6-4, Friday night as Purdue pitcher Matt Bischoff threw a complete game.

"Bischoff got tough when he had to get tough," coach Wine said. "He has a sense, aside from his good fastball and slider, he has a sense when a hitter might chase a ball or when to go in. He's one of the top pitchers in the league, no doubt about it."

Bischoff struck out nine and surrendered 10 hits on 147 pitches as he out-dueled Nittany Lion starter T.J. Macy. Macy gave up four runs in six-plus innings of work and struck out 12, the most strikeouts by a Penn State pitcher since Alan Stidfole struck out 13 against Northwestern in 2005.

Penn State (18-13, 3-4 Big Ten) had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning. The Lions had runners on first and second but Mike Deese struck out looking to end the game.

Penn State continues its three-game series against the Boilermakers at 2:05 p.m. Calvin Grumley will be the starting pitcher for the Lions.
