Lions to face Boilermakers

Robbie Wine admitted he was "sweating it out" during his club's marathon win.

For midweek games, the Penn State baseball coach said there's a fine line between wanting to win but still allowing relievers to get in innings.

"For midweek, you need those wins yet you want to develop and get guys ready for the weekend," Wine said. "You're constantly juggling that."

Still, six Nittany Lions pitchers saw time in Wednesday's 12-11 victory against Bucknell. Four of them pitched at least an inning, with David Lutz throwing 41 pitches in 2.2 innings for the win.

Wine said he started thinking about the possibility of extra innings as early as the fifth inning. He said by using some of his younger relievers early in the contest, he would have his veterans available for the later and extra innings. Wine said some players he would have turned to would be Scott Kelley, Paul Cianciolo and Drew Palen.

But Wine won't have to worry about mixing and matching his pitchers this weekend against the Boilermakers, who finished second in the Big Ten last season.

For the season, Penn State's bullpen has combined with the starters to post a team ERA of 5.30, which ranks fifth in the conference.

Although Penn State's bullpen surrendered seven earned runs in as many innings in its last game, Lutz remains confident the bullpen will be ready this weekend.

"Maybe a little rusty," Lutz said about the bullpen. "But I'm sure all those guys will be able to come through if we need them in a weekend series. Everybody has innings when they struggle."
