Football sleds were pushed to the corner of Holuba Hall and Penn State baseball team members filed into the indoor practice building Tuesday, some showing frustration as they walked through the doors.
"It's a terrible feeling to tell you the truth, seeing the weather outside and being stuck back in here," freshman third baseman Jordan Steranka said. "But you gotta do what you gotta do."
Instead of facing off against Pittsburgh at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Tuesday night, weather forced the postponement of the game and the Nittany Lions headed inside for practice. Medlar Field at 6:35 tonight for the second matchup of the season with local rival Bucknell.
"We felt real good after taking two out of three from Michigan," Steranka said. "But it's always nice to have a day off, get relaxed and have all our soreness and weaknesses out of our system."
The Lions took a day off Monday and went through a light workout at Holuba Tuesday in preparation for Bucknell and a three-game home series with Purdue this weekend.
Coach Robbie Wine hesitated to say any time would be a good time for the cold, snowy weather, but he saw it as a good opportunity to work on fundamentals again.
"It doesn't always hurt to get back to some basics again with practicing, and that's one of the hardest things with the college schedule across the country -- a lack of practice days within the season," he said.
"Having a day like this every once in a while breaks it up and we can get back to doing some individual work and working on some details that you don't get a chance to work on in games."
Last Tuesday, the Lions allowed four eighth-inning Bison runs to blow a four-run lead. But a Ben Heath single in the bottom of the inning propelled Penn State to a 6-5 victory.
Tonight, freshman right-hander Ryan Ignas (3-0, 4.88 ERA) will get the start in what will be a bullpen effort for the Lions against Bucknell's Alex Cillo (0-3, 7.04) in his first career start.
In past years, four-game conference weekends allowed for fewer midweek games. While the Lions have gotten used to the extra plate appearances during the week, they'll have to adjust to the extra day off when they face the Bison freshman.
"I like it a lot better this year with the three game series because we usually get five games a week with Tuesday, Wednesday," senior first baseman Cory Wine said. "I like that a lot better than last year we had the whole week off and then four games over the weekend.
"So I think that's part of why we're hitting so well this year, a lot of ABs during the week."
