Students look inward, create self-representing artwork

This week in the Patterson Gallery, student artists will give visitors a glimpse of how they view themselves.

"It is understanding the self as a figure itself," instructor Salvatore Schiciano said. "Then taking it further to convey some sort of interest."

Large artist self-portraits were created for ART 422 (Advanced Figure Drawing), taught by Schiciano (graduate-painting).

Ecce Homo (ECCE): Self-Presentation will be on display in the Patterson Gallery through Saturday. There will be a reception at 6 p.m. Thursday in the gallery.

Schiciano said this is his first semester teaching the course. He said the class quickly became focused on the project.

He said students began working on the drawings three to four weeks into the semester and were given almost complete freedom outside of form and scale. The only restrictions were height, width and the use of predominately dry mediums, he said.

He said students used a variety of materials, including paper, canvas and wood panels, as bases for their portraits.

Schiciano said Jesse Baerenrodt-Hayspell's self-portrait is particularly interesting. The portrait depicts Baerenrodt-Hayspell (senior-science) as a nude wearing a crown like the Statue of Liberty's.

"Jesse's is a really interesting take on things he is interested in as a science major," he said.

Lindsey Corle (senior-art education and painting) said she used paper, fabric, colored pencils and acrylic paint to form her self-representation.

"The collage is a way of constructing and seeing how much I can take away from something," she said. "If I take this much away, how much can I leave?"

Schiciano said he thinks each portrait in the exhibit has particular qualities that are good, and none of the drawings are better than any other.

"I am pleased to see what they all have achieved and how well they all worked together setting up in the space," he said.
