Speaker asks for permission before kiss

Students from Men Against Violence wore T-shirts featuring the phrase "Can I kiss you?" outside 129 HUB to encourage students to attend a lecture of the same name Thursday night.

About 150 students attended the event, in which speaker Mike Domitrz talked about dating, body language and sexual violence.

"Have you ever watched one of your friends trying to hook up? Isn't it hilarious?" Domitrz asked the audience.

He said those situations are funny because people often misread body language. Domitrz said the solution to that problem is to simply ask your partner, "Can I kiss you?"

To demonstrate his method, he asked audience members to participate in various dating scenarios.

"I can't believe I did that," said Caroline Fitzgerald after she participated in a scenario about body language.

Fitzgerald (freshman-business marketing) said she came to the lecture because she works at the Center for Women Students.

She said she enjoyed the event because it was interactive and easy to relate to.

"He has a way about him that gets everyone excited," she said.

Though much of Domitrz's lecture was funny, the parts of his speech pertaining to sexual assault left some students with tears in their eyes.

Men Against Violence member Jason Litman (senior-supply chain and information systems) said he likes how Domitrz's speech got students to confront tough questions, and he hopes it encourages more people to take a stand against sexual violence.

"We believe we can empower men to stop sexual assault," he said.
