Former mascot enters ARD program

Former Nittany Lion mascot James D. Sheep was placed in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program last week after police charged him with driving under the influence in the fall.

Sheep, 23, of 818 Bellaire Ave., entered the program March 24 after police charged him Nov. 22, the morning of the Michigan State football game. An officer noticed he had too many people in his car and detected the odor of alcohol, police said.

Pittsburgh man charged with felony

A Pittsburgh man was charged with a felony count of intent to deliver a controlled substance Thursday after police say he had one-half pound of marijuana in his car.

Michael D. Maughan, 114 Center St., is also charged with possession of a controlled substance and faces summary traffic charges of speeding and driving with a suspended license.

Maughan was driving 83 mph on Interstate 99 near mile marker 57 at about 8 p.m. Wednesday when police pulled him over, police said. Officers subsequently found one-half pound of marijuana in his car, police said. Maughan was released from the Centre County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 cash bail Thursday.

Police identify suspect in reported fight

An Altoona man was taken into custody late Monday night in the HUB-Robeson Center after police identified him as a suspect in a reported fight, Penn State Police said.

Although police charged no one in connection with the reported fight, police found that Michael Thomas Crist, 19, had a warrant out for his arrest in Blair County. After being served the warrant, Crist was subsequently charged with felony obscene and other sexual materials and performances, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors, police said.

The charges are unrelated to the reported fight, police said.

Sick student's condition upgraded

The condition of a Penn State student who has been in the hospital all week with a case of meningococcal meningitis was upgraded to "good" Thursday, according to Penn State Live.

The man was originally admitted to Mount Nittany Medical Center last Friday before being transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. His condition was listed as critical Saturday before being upgraded to serious Sunday night and fair Wednesday. The student, a 20-year-old member of Alpha Chi Rho fraternity, had been living at the fraternity's house. University Health Services gave preventive antibiotics to about 60 people who had contact with the man. No other cases have been reported.

Professor to lecture on computer music

New York University professor Robert Rowe will host a lecture at 2:30 p.m. today in 117 Borland Lab focusing on recent developments in computer music. The talk will focus on the field of interactive computer music and performance, which has only really been a development of the last 20 years, Rowe said.

Palmer curator to discuss art, imagery

A gallery talk titled From Here to There: American Transportation Imagery in the Palmer Museum of Art will be featured at 12:10 p.m. today. Leo Mazow, curator of American art, will lead the discussion and will focus on early to mid-20th century American art containing imagery of trolleys, boats, horse-and-buggies and some cars and gas stations, Mazow said.
