The UPUA presidential campaign teams were outside the HUB-Robeson center in full force today around noon, as the battle to get the most votes heats up despite the cold damp weather.
Gavin Keirans, the current University Park Undergraduate Association president who's also running for re-election, said the rain might affect voter turnout.
"The weather is not good," Keirans (junior-business management) said. "Ground game is 75 percent. If it stays like this, we're cool. If it pours, we need to re-strategize."
Keirans said he already campaigned in East Halls this morning.
Before that, he and his campaign team posted fliers before the 6 a.m. UPUA commissioner and presidential ticket breakfast at The Waffle Shop, 364 E. College Ave.
The first incumbent candidate in UPUA's 3-year history paced the sidewalks outside of the HUB, as his opponent Samantha Miller stood just feet away. Both Miller (junior-political science) and Keirans handed out fliers to potential voters.
"This is pretty strong," Keirans said. "We can't help but feel confident."
Across the street, Miller supporter Alyson Rotz pushed open the HUB doors to greet Miller.
"You look cute in your red heels," Rotz (junior-public relations) told her. Red is Miller's campaign color.
Rotz said she is confident Miller could pull out a victory.
"She has some serious stretch across this campus," Rotz said. "People want her to win."
Also nearby was Nick Borsuk's running mate Katherine Paseka, who said Borsuk (junior-history) was in class at the time.
Paseka said she was glad she to experience interacting with students throughout the two-and-a-half week campaign process.
"I can't imagine being overseas," she said with a smile, referencing Keirans' running mate Hillary Gupta, who is studying abroad this semester and campaigned from Spain.
"They're spending more money on long distance phone calls for [Gupta]," Paseka said laughing and smiling.
Keirans said he's been talking with Gupta throughout the day. Earlier this morning, she called and wished him good luck, he said.
Outside the HUB, members of Keirans's campaign team joined him. One of those members was Keirans's campaign manager Andrew Karasik, who took a call from Interfraternity Council President Luke Pierce.
Pierce and the IFC issued a joint endorsement with the Panhellenic Council, offering their support to Keirans.
