Rough fifth inning dooms baseball team

T.J. Macy planned on going with a splitter to get the strikeout.

Instead, he went with a fastball and paid the price with a walk.

Macy's walk on a full count brought in the first of five runs in the fifth inning as the Penn State baseball team blew an early lead in losing to Ohio State, 8-3, Friday night in Lubrano Park at Medlar Field.

"I don't know," Macy said about the fifth inning. "I've got to step up and make a pitch."

The offensive outburst by the Buckeyes came after Macy held the visitors hitless until two outs in the crucial fifth inning.

Macy attributed the Buckeyes' rally more to himself than Ohio State's offense, which he called, "nothing special."

The Nittany Lions (13-9, 0-1 Big Ten) grabbed a 2-0 lead after the first inning but were held scoreless until the ninth inning as they had their six-game winning streak snapped.

Jordan Steranka led the offense, as he drove in two runners to raise his season RBI total to 22.

Penn State will be back in action against the Buckeyes (19-3, 1-0) Saturday at 2:05 p.m. Scott Kelly will start on the mound for the Lions.
