Centre Daily Times eliminates positions

The Centre Daily Times announced Thursday it is eliminating three positions and cutting wages for employees who earn more than $25,000 a year.

One position each was eliminated from the news, advertising and business departments, City Editor Teresa Bonner said.

Bonner declined to comment any further. The McClatchy Company, the newspaper's publishing company, declined to comment as well.

Former employee faces fraud charges

A former Penn State employee faces criminal charges after Penn State Police say she used a university-issued credit card to make about $12,600 in fraudulent charges over the course of 11 years.

Karen Chorney, of 1931 Wexford Road, Palmyra, was charged with access device fraud, theft by deception, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, tampering with records or identification and receiving stolen property, police said.

Chorney, who was dismissed when the purchases were discovered, made the purchases between August 1997 and November 2008, police said.

PSU files response in Phi Delta case

Penn State filed a response March 9 to the latest motion in the ongoing Phi Delta Theta litigation, asking attorneys for the national fraternity to demonstrate grounds for intervention in the lawsuit between the university and owners of the former Phi Delta Theta fraternity house.

The university denied allegations that the interests of a future Phi Delta Theta fraternity chapter at Penn State are not represented in the lawsuit.

Penn State filed suit against the owners of the former Phi Delta Theta fraternity house in November after the university's offer to purchase the property, 240 N. Burrowes Road, was denied last summer. A stipulation in the property's 1905 deed allows the university to purchase the property if it is not used as a fraternity or chapter house for the Pennsylvania Theta Chapter of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Penn State's Phi Delta Theta chapter had its charter suspended by national headquarters in 2007 after an alcohol violation earlier that year.

Police: Man charged after bike incident

A 73-year-old Bellefonte man was charged with driving on roadways laned for traffic Wednesday, after police say he struck a vehicle while riding his bicycle, the State College Police Department said.

Richard A. White, 402 Workman Lane, was riding his bicycle at about 4:18 p.m. in the eastbound lane of College Avenue when he attempted to merge right and collided with a vehicle traveling eastbound on the "C ramp," police said.

White, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Mount Nittany Medical and treated for facial injuries and possible head injuries, police said.
