Baseball team swept in doubleheader

After a hot start in Florida, the bats finally cooled off.

The Penn State baseball team was swept by Rutgers, 6-5 and 5-2, Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla. The losses ended a two-game winning streak and were the first time in almost a week that the Nittany Lions failed to top 10 runs in a game.

In the first game of the day, Penn State (7-8) lost in 10 innings when Rutgers' Brandon Boykin scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out. The rally started with two straight walks surrendered by Lion pitcher Drew Palen.

In the second game, Rutgers (8-6) was outhit, 8-5, but scored all five runs in the fourth inning. They were all unearned, as an error by Rick Marlin, while not leading to a run on the play, ultimately lead to five runs later in the inning.

Penn State pitcher Mike Lorentson fell to 0-3 on the season despite allowing no earned runs while pitching 4.1 innings.

The Lions look to end its Florida trip with a win and split the series against Rutgers when the two play at noon Sunday.
