Their sub shops are iconic in the Penn State community, but from the perspective of owners Don Yontosh and Brian Martin, it's time to move on.
V&S Sandwiches, 128 E. College Ave., and Penn State Sub Shop #1, 225 E. Beaver Ave., have both been listed on the market by their respective owners.
Each has a long-standing relationship with the Penn State community. Penn State Sub Shop #1 has been at its location since the 1980s, famous for its storefront display of Penn State football scores.
V&S has stood on College Avenue in front of Old Main for the last eight years.
And while both shops have roots in the area, the owners are looking to go in another direction.
"The big reason for the sale is that I don't have the time to put in here," said Don Yontosh, owner of Penn State Sub Shop #1.
There is no shortage of places to get subs in downtown State College. Nonetheless, V&S Owner Brian Martin said there have been people interested in the shop, and he's optimistic a sale will soon come through.
"It's prime location," said Martin, who would only say he listed the shop for sale about three or four weeks ago because of "personal reasons."
Yontosh is similarly confident a buyer will emerge soon, though his shop has already been on the market for two months. He's heard from three interested parties and hopes to seal the deal by the end of the semester.
Martin isn't surprised -- while he's owned V&S since it opened in 2001, Penn State Sub Shop #1 has changed hands many times during the past decade.
"It's always on the market," Martin said. "They've probably had four or five owners in the last eight years."
This aside, Yontosh insists the business is profitable.
"If I had the time, I'd stay here," said Yontosh, who also owns a painting business that takes up the majority of his time. He had intended to hand down the business to his daughter, although she is now too busy to pay attention to the business, too.
Yontosh and Martin both refused to disclose the amount they are looking for.
"My wife's running the sale of the shop, so I'm not even sure what the exact figure is," Yontosh said.
With several locations in the Reading area -- though Martin only owns the one in State College -- V&S is a successful chain Martin says should be easy to sell.
"I was hoping it would be sold by the end of the summertime," Martin said. "Hopefully, it'll be completed by the end of the year."
