Kelley, Wine lead Lions to first victory

Scott Kelley picked up a win in his first career start as the Penn State baseball team earned its first win of the season by defeating Northwestern, 9-1, Saturday in St. Petersburg, Fla., as part of the Big Ten/Big East Challenge.

The senior right-hander, who rotated between relief pitcher and outfielder in his first three seasons, tossed five scoreless innings before allowing a run and being replaced by David Lutz in the sixth inning. Lutz, Mike Pierce and Paul Cianciolo combined to allow no runs and just one hit in three and one-third innings of relief.

Offensively, first baseman Cory Wine paced the Nittany Lions (1-1) from the cleanup spot by finishing 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBI, three runs and a walk.

The Lions conclude play in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge at 10 a.m. Sunday versus Seton Hall in Clearwater, Fla.
