The No. 2 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers rebounded from a slow start to get by the overmatched Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University by a score of 5-1.
Penn State got strong performances from sophomore forward Tim O'Brien and senior defenseman Steve Thurston, who both tallied a pair of goals. For the season, O'Brien now has a team-leading 27 scores, while Thurston has lit the lamp 15 times.
After a scoreless first period, the Icers took the lead with Thurston's first goal, a power-play score from inside the blue line. O'Brien followed less than three minutes later, beating Oakland goalie Alex Pikunas off the faceoff to give Penn State a 2-0 lead.
The third period saw Penn State tack on a goal from Marek Polidor, as well as Thurston's and O'Brien's second goals. Oakland's only goal came less than three minutes into the period.
Penn State goalie Nick Signet had a strong outing, stopping 22 of the Grizzlies' 23 shots.
The Icers will take on Oakland again at 3:30 Saturday at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.
