Forget leather thongs and polyester slips. This Valentine's Day, students can indulge instead in old-Hollywood glamour with vintage lingerie from The Rag and Bone, a downtown State College vintage clothing store.
The store's new collection, purposefully released on the holiday weekend, features items from the 1920s to the 1960s, including quilted bed-jackets, nighties ranging in color from peach to midnight blue, delicate slips and even a bullet bra or two.
"We've got gorgeous full-length embroidered nightgowns, made from satin or silk and trimmed with lace," said Shelley Banker, owner of The Rag and Bone, 224 E. Calder Way. "They're cut in a way that's very flattering to the female body -- a bias cut, clingy. Think Jean Harlow from the 1930s."
Browsing the store Thursday, Catherine Sweitzer (junior-geography and nutrition) said the collection was "fun to see" and was "more conservative" than what is available nowadays. She added she was doubtful she would buy any of the items.
"Maybe only for dress up," she said. "I feel it's old-fashioned and not really my style."
Banker said she had been building this collection for a long time. She finally decided to put it all out on sale since Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday this year. The lingerie is all in good condition, Banker said, adding she has taken the necessary steps to ensure the pieces have all been well-maintained.
"These are beautifully made pieces that have hardly ever been worn. They're pieces that women have tucked away in drawers and didn't necessarily wear," Banker said.
The collection is priced according to condition and embellishment. Nylon slips from the 1960s and 1970s range from $10 to $15, Banker said, whereas slips made of satin or silk from the 1920s to 1940s cost about $20 to $35.
"It's definitely more affordable than what you would find in a lingerie store elsewhere," Banker said. "For example, a full-length satin nightgown would normally cost about $90. The most expensive item in my collection is $50."
Jessie Stover, the manager of Jezebel's Boutique, 366 E. College Ave., said her lingerie store will not face much competition from The Rag and Bone's lingerie collection.
"Our style is different, more new," she said.
"If there's competition, it's only going to be a little," she said.
Banker said her collection is great for those looking for a unique gift for Valentine's Day or just simply as part of an everyday ensemble.
"It's not limited to the bedroom," she said.
