Rockwell to join Texas staff

Despite losing her assistant coach four days ago, Alisha Glass said there is no timetable for when or if the position will be filled.

Glass said women's volleyball head coach Russ Rose addressed the team last week, saying Salima Rockwell has taken her coaching talents to the University of Texas.

Rockwell accepted the same position at Texas, Longhorns' assistant media relations director Spencer Kitley confirmed in an e-mail sent Sunday.

"It's surprising," Glass said. "It was surprising even to her. It wasn't something she planned on, it just happened."

Rockwell replaces former Texas assistant coach Tonya Johnson, who was introduced as head coach at Georgia Tech Jan. 9. She was on the Longhorns' staff for six years.

Glass said there were no hard feelings toward the former Penn State setter, saying the team supports her decision and wishes her the best of luck.

"Salima had two stints here," Rose said in a Jan. 21 press release issued by Texas, "and all the years she was here were enjoyable ones. I wish her and her family the best in their next step."

Rockwell has been on Rose's staff for the past three seasons. She was a three-time All-American for the Nittany Lions from 1991-94.

Her role with the Longhorns won't be much different from her duties in Rec Hall and during the offseason.

In the press release, Elliott said Rockwell will be involved with recruiting, player development and working intensively with the Longhorn setters.

"Everyone in our program is excited about the addition of Salima," Longhorns' head coach Jerritt Elliott said in the press release. "Very rarely do you get someone that has her credentials as a former athlete, as a coach and as a person. When we bring in someone with her qualifications, it is a great addition to our team."
