Lowering ticket prices to $1 boosted a movie theater's attendance and was appreciated by customers this weekend.
Carmike Cinema 6, 501 Benner Pike, lowered its prices over the three-day weekend and began showing older, second-run movies, such as Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Quantum of Solace.
Theater Manager David Goodman said the cinema was "considerably busier" than it had been in previous weekends and customers, especially college students and families, embraced the changes.
"You can take a family of five people to the movies for $5 instead of $50," Goodman said.
After buying a ticket for Eagle Eye, Julie Miller of State College said she liked the price change.
"It's a great idea," she said. " ... If only the popcorn was a little more reasonable."
Caitlin Metzler (freshman-biology) said she loved the prices so much she watched Zack and Miri Make a Porno on Saturday and returned Sunday to see Role Models. She said she will probably skip seeing new movies when they first come out and wait for them to come to Cinema 6 because of the lower prices.
On Friday the theater will start showing The Dark Knight, which Goodman expects to be well-attended, partly because of the upcoming Academy Awards.
"People get to see it on the big screen before it gets nominated for all its Oscars," Goodman said.
The theater also plans to show independent films in the future, Goodman said, though ticket prices will probably be higher for those shows. Goodman mentioned Synecdoche, New York as a possible example.
