Lions down Wolverines

As Talor Battle kicked to Jamelle Cornley on a two-on-none fast break for a slam, it served as an early dagger to Michigan with nearly 18 minutes still remaining.

From the dunk to a barrage of Cornley baskets in the paint to a series of second-half 3-pointers, Penn State scored from all over the floor in a 73-58 defeat of the Wolverines Tuesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center.

"We always talk about the first half and the second half, we talk about throwing the first punch," Penn State guard Danny Morrissey said. "We didn't do that so much in the first half, but in the second half we really did do that. We jumped on them early, and we got them down and we always talk about how you smell blood and you go after them."

On the other side, Michigan tossed up 3-pointer after 3-pointer and came away empty on most, finishing the game 5-for-30 from long-range.

Michigan guard Manny Harris -- the Big Ten's leading scorer coming into the game -- netted just four points and missed all five of his 3-point attempts.

For the Wolverines, the only consistent scoring came from forward DeShawn Sims' 21 points.

"With some of our guys I think it's very mental," Michigan coach John Beilein said. "What's hurt us is we have not had one of those days I think in 10 days or nine days where we've said, 'Let's just us get better today'... It's an NBA schedule and we haven't been able to improve and get guys hundreds of reps on their shots."

Cornley paced the Lions with 17 points, but just about everyone got into the scoring act. Cornley, Battle, Stanley Pringle and Morrissey each scored in double-figures.

Center Andrew Ott -- who entered the game averaging two points per outing -- drew a big ovation from the crowd when he exited the floor in the second half following a dunk and a tough basket that ended with him on the floor. He finished with eight points.

"I think that's when we're at our best when we share the ball," Morrissey said. "It all started with how well Jamelle was playing on the inside. They couldn't stop him so they had to double and then he kicked it out and we just had whatever we wanted from there."

Michigan entered the game leading the Big Ten in made 3-pointers, but it ranked just 10th in the league in 3-point percentage. The disparity showed throughout Tuesday's contest, as Michigan was already 1-for-7 from beyond the arc three minutes in.

And after the Penn State offense got rolling, the stagnant Michigan offense allowed the Lions to take control and never look back.
