After a year-long campaign that included numerous debates and public visits, Glenn "G.T." Thompson stepped into his new role as U.S. Representative for the 5th District Jan. 6 as he was sworn in at Washington, D.C.
In an event that he called "very humbling," Thompson said he was visited by several residents from all across the 5th District who came to show their support.
"It is an honor and privilege to be here on behalf of the 660,000 residents of the 5th District, especially at such an historical time in our nation," Thompson said.
In his new position, Thompson replaces former U.S. Representative John Peterson, R-Pa., who held the position for six terms.
As concern grows about the nation's economy, Thompson said he would focus on "smart" government solutions that would bring more transparency and accountability to Washington.
Thompson, who is a graduate of Penn State and the former Centre County Republican Party chairman, said students could look forward to his emphasis on "process." He said he hoped to relay how vital good deliberation, debates and judgment are to making a final decision on a variety of important issues.
