Lions split double-dual meet against in-state rivals

The bouts were equally split, five to five, but it was bonus points that prevented the No. 15 Penn State wrestling team from sweeping its two matches of the afternoon.

The Nittany Lions lost by only one point to No. 9-ranked Lehigh on Sunday at Rec Hall, 17-16, in front of a crowd of 3,500 people. Two major decision losses by Lion wrestlers Jack Decker and Clay Steadman gave Lehigh the bonus points necessary to pull off the victory.

In their other match of the double-dual meet, the Lions dropped only one bout to blow away Lock Haven, 36-3.

Jake Strayer swept both of his matches, as he competed in his first dual meet of the season at the 133-pound weight class. The senior captain defeated No. 20-ranked Matt Fisk of Lehigh, 6-1, and Lock Haven's Billy Ashnault, 10-4.

To start the Lehigh match off, No. 15-ranked Quentin Wright executed a double-leg takedown with 20 seconds remaining in the match to defeat Lehigh's No. 14-ranked Alex Caruso. The freshman from Wingate improves now to 2-3 against ranked opponents this season for the Lions (5-3).
