Lady Lions overpower Michigan, record season-high 50 rebounds in win

When Julia Trogele was taken out 11-and-a-half minutes into Sunday's game with three fouls, it seemed as though another Big Ten loss was imminent for the Penn State women's basketball team.

However, a quick turnaround highlighted by rebounding and point distribution led to a 76-58 win over Michigan on Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Lady Lions (7-7, 2-2 Big Ten) went on a 13-0 run stretching from the 5-minute mark in the first half through the early stages of the second period, putting the lead out of Michigan's (8-7, 2-2) reach.

Tyra Grant led all scorers with 24 points, going 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Penn State also received double-digit efforts from Trogele, Brianne O'Rourke and Mashea Williams. It was the third time this season that at least four Lady Lions finished with at least 10 points.

After struggling at the onset of the game on the boards, Penn State began to box out Michigan's taller interior players, leading to a 50-32 rebounding edge. The Lady Lions' 50 boards was the highest total of the season and the most in Coquese Washington's two years as head coach.

Evelyn Lewis led Penn State with nine rebounds, while Grant and Janessa Wolff followed up with eight and seven boards, respectively.

Carly Benson led the Wolverines with 21 points and shot 5-for-12 from the 3-point line.

Penn State also performed well from the free-throw line, where the team has faced difficulties so far this year. The Lady Lions went 11-for-13 from the foul line, shooting a season-best 84.6 percent.

The Lady Lions remain at home for their game next Sunday against Indiana (9-2, 2-0).
