Eateries offer study break option

Students hungry for snacks during late-night study sessions have plenty of options in State College. Many downtown restaurants are open late into the night and offer plenty of variety for hungry students.

Insomnia Cookies, 421 E. Beaver Ave., Suite G2, is a favorite among students for its fresh-baked cookies and brownies.

With prices starting at just $1 for a cookie, Insomnia can soothe even the sweetest of sweet tooths without breaking the bank.

The chocolate chip cookies are the best, said Vince Romano (freshman-division of undergraduate studies).

"They're just really good," he said.

Romano said he "definitely" planned to order cookies while studying this week. Insomnia Cookies is open until 3 a.m., with delivery available until 2:45 a.m.

Are U Hungry, 111 Sowers St. and 222 W. Beaver Ave., offers a more substantial snack for hungry students with its "Fat Sandwiches" that pack a meaty punch.

With two locations, delivery available and a kitchen open until 3 a.m., Are U Hungry is especially accessible to its often ravenous patrons.

Finals week is an especially busy time for the restaurant, Manager Jorge Garcia said.

"Usually, we do have a little more business over the week, more late-night business," he said.

D.P. Dough, 401 E. Beaver Ave., is a favorite among Penn Staters for its calzones, a rare commodity among State College restaurants. However, the restaurant also offers a variety of salads for the more health-conscious student.

Owner Matt Gardella said he expects finals week to bring an increase in customers.

"We definitely see more business during finals week," he said, adding he plans to run specials throughout the week.

D.P. Dough is open until 2 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Gumby's Pizza, 300 S. Pugh St., is where the pizza often takes a backseat to the immensely popular Pokey Sticks, the cheese-covered breadsticks that General Manager Matt Yeager said are the most ordered item on the menu, in addition to the "feel good foods like pastas and salads."

Gumby's is open until 3 a.m. "at least," and Yeager promised special deals for finals week.

Yeager said finals week brings many students to Gumby's.

"The Monday and Tuesday of finals week might be our busiest Monday and Tuesday of the year," he said.

Canyon Wings, 219 E. Beaver Ave., opened as the sister store to the popular Canyon Pizza, but has carved out a name of its own with its wings and variety of sauces ranging from curry barbeque to honey garlic.

The best is the General Tso's sauce, said Ryan Rogala (freshman-engineering).

"I love that sauce," he said.

Canyon Wings offers more than just wings, with boneless chicken available, along with mozzarella sticks, pierogies and a host of other options.

With delivery available until 2:30 or 3:30 in the morning, depending on the day, Canyon Wings is another potential choice for late-night studiers.

Orders for all of the above restaurants can be placed by phone, in store or on Lionmenus.com.
