Girl Talk show brings repercussions for SOMA

Rushed planning for Thursday's Girl Talk show led to a rocky event and questions about the future of concerts at the HUB-Robeson Center.

"Overall, the event was a success," SOMA Vice President Danny Michelson said. "We got a great turnout. However, the crowd did get out of hand, and there was some damage to the HUB."

Penn State Police said Alumni Hall is intended to hold about 1,200 people, but the almost 2,000-person crowd waiting to enter grew "disorderly."

In the ensuing surge to get into Alumni Hall, a set of doors, a wooden magazine rack and drywall surrounding a pillar near the room were damaged, police said.

The remains of the magazine rack was swept through the doors with the crowd, resulting in a large pile of newspapers and other debris in the hall. The cost estimate for the damage was not available Friday, police said. HUB officials could not be reached for comment.

Michelson said those representing the HUB were understanding about the situation, though SOMA would be held responsible for the night's aftermath.

"SOMA will have to pay for the damage," Michelson said. "We'll probably have no money in our account at the beginning of next semester."

There were also some minor injuries sustained by members of the rowdy crowd. One person received an ankle injury in the initial crowd surge and was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for treatment, Penn State Police said.

Michelson said because the show was confirmed only two days before the event was scheduled to occur, SOMA had a limited amount of time to prepare. He said SOMA worked to ensure the greatest possible number of concertgoers would get to see Girl Talk.

"I was disappointed in the behavior of the people waiting outside," Michelson said. "We made sure to let people in at the time promised. We had no control over who they let in. I wish more people could've gotten in."

Michelson said in retrospect, SOMA would have required students to obtain tickets with their student IDs to better control the crowd.

SOMA had tried to have the Alumni Hall lights turned off during the show, he said, adding he knew the students were displeased about the lights.

"The HUB refused to turn the lights off for security purposes," Michelson said. "They knew if they turned the lights off, more bad stuff could've happened."
