The Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (Thon) is a huge organization with thousands of people working toward the goal of raising money for kids with cancer.
Within any large group, shifting and readjusting of positions and responsibilities is likely to happen in order for the organization to grow and be effective.
This week, Thon officials said they were considering moving the greek associate vice president (AVP) positions from overall council to captain positions.
The announcement has upset the greek community, whose numbers are concerned they will lose greek representation on the overall committee. Thon officials said they considered the change in the first place because they want to increase the effectiveness of the overall positions and make a decision that would be in the best interest of Thon.
The motto of Thon is FTK -- for the kids. As Thon adjusts internally, officials and the greek community should keep that concept in mind. Thon should never be about the glorification of one group. Thon already bears the name of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Council (PHC), an honor and nod toward the tradition of the event.
Greeks should allow whatever change Thon officials decide to make with grace and humility.
In the past few years, Thon has shifted away from being a predominately greek event, with the entire Penn State community becoming more involved in the event each year.
A more accurate name for Thon would now be the Penn State Dance Marathon -- something overalls in the future may want to consider. The overall committee should reflect that shift.
Greeks should never be barred from the committee. They have just as much right to be there as any other campus group. But the position shift may aid communication among committees and define the jobs better.
Ann Marie DiPietro, PHC president, summarized it well.
"Both AVP positions on [the PHC] executive board need to be more structured so they have more defined responsibilities," she said. "As long as we identify specific ways for the AVP to act as liaison, the position will be more effective."
Greeks should have a voice on the overall council. If the decision is made to change the AVPs to captains, greeks should still be able to keep a representative on the council as a voice of that community.
But greek positions need to serve the greater good, and overall message, of Thon. An internal fight about job descriptions does not help anyone.
