Downtown library to rock this weekend

Correction appended

Freak-out jazz and surf music will rock the normally quiet Schlow Centre Region Library this weekend when two duo bands perform.

The two-member bands, Flying Sutra and indoorpark, both from local record label Deep Water Acres, will perform at 6 p.m. this Saturday in Schlow's Community Room.

Deep Water Acres, founded by Nathaniel Rasmussen and Kevin Moist, has previously hosted shows in State College before, with its last one featuring the bands La Otracina and Evening Fires at Chronic Town, 224 W. College Ave. in October. Rasmussen, Schlow employee, said that experimental films will be projected behind the bands while they perform.

"People should definitely come out for a night of duo music. The contrast of the bands is very unique, and it's one of those opportunities for people to go to a free show early in their evening and experience something they wouldn't get usually an opportunity to do," indoorpark guitarist Nick Shillace said.

Saturday night will be Flying Sutra's first performance at Penn State, Rasmussen said.

He added he and Moist have been trying to book the Phildelphia-based duo for a while, and he is excited for their first appearance in State College.

According to a Deep Water Acres press release, Flying Sutra draws its sound from free jazz, avant-punk, and psychedelic music.

The band is composed of guitarist George Draguns, a State College native, and drummer Bob Cozzolino.

"Flying Sutra is into taking some of the free jazz from the Philly area and making it more avant-garde, and there's a lot of improvisation," Rasmussen said. "The band has a constant dialogue between the drummer and guitarist."

The other duo, indoorpark, is made up of guitarist Shillace and drummer Jon Moshier. Shillace said Moshier describes indoorpark's sound as "found sound vs. lost rock."

"Indoorpark's guitar player [Shillace] has been to State college before, he does finger picking acoustic guitar and writes his own compositions," Rasmussen said. "He plays a lot of John Fahey -- a folk guitarist from the '60s -- but here, he's playing clean electric guitar paired with a drummer."

Shillace said the band formed in 2000 in Detroit. The band aims to give its audience a continuous music experience in order to "experience the overall arc of [their] set," he said.

Correction: This article incorrectly reports the time of the Flying Sutra/indoorpark show at Schlow Centre Region Library. The correct time of Saturday's show was 8 p.m.
