Police arrest man on escape charges

Patton Township Police arrested a Pittston man early Wednesday morning on escape charges after they say he called 911 from his Toftrees hotel room to report a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

A routine check on Darin Dixon, 32, at the scene revealed he was an escapee for more than three years from Luzerne County Prison, where he was serving time for a DUI-related charge, police said.

Police said Dixon failed to return from a work-release program Sept. 2, 2005.

Dixon was taken into custody without incident and placed in Centre County Correctional Facility, where he awaits extradition to Luzerne County to face escape charges, police said.

Student waives preliminary hearing

A Penn State student charged with riot in connection to the post-Ohio State game downtown disturbance waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Robert J. Slater III, of 222 W. Beaver Ave., is set to face trial on charges of riot, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.

Police said Slater was identified in a photograph participating in the Oct. 25 riot and carrying a street light. Slater has denied tearing down the light post and said he only walked "about five or six steps with it" before police pepper sprayed him.

Fraternity waives preliminary hearing

A Penn State fraternity charged with furnishing waived its preliminary hearing Monday.

Beta Theta Pi fraternity, 220 N. Burrowes Road, was charged in October with two misdemeanor counts of unlawful acts relative to liquor, malt and brewed beverages and licensees, according to the complaint.

Police said the fraternity held a tailgate with about 100 people Sept. 6 at parking lot 25D. Individuals were taking cans of Natural Light beer from a trashcan with "no control over who could obtain the beer," according to the criminal complaint. Upon investigation, police found that some attendees were under 21 years of age.

Pop-rock group Eve 6 will perform tonight in HUB Alumni Hall as part of a brief college tour.

Best known for its hits "Inside Out" and "Here's to the Night," the Southern California trio disbanded in 2004 and reformed in 2007 minus original guitarist Jon Siebels. The band is tentatively planning to have "new music available for all to hear" sometime in 2009, according to a recent MySpace blog post by the band.

The sold-out show, hosted by the Student Programming Association, will start at 9 p.m. with a set by singer-songwriter Matt Lowell. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

Festival to feature Jewish delicacies

Congregation Brit Shalom, 620 Hamilton Ave., will hold its third annual Jewish food festival from 4 to 7 p.m. today, sponsored by State College's Hadassah chapter.

The festival will feature "ethnic delicacies," including kuegel, streudel and challah, event chair Harriet Feinstein said. Latkes will be served with a hot dog dinner, which costs $7 for adults and $4 for children, and there will be a latke fry-off at about 5:30 p.m., in which attendees can taste some recipes, Feinstein said. Jewish holiday cards and other Hanukkah items will be for sale.

About 175 people attended last year's event, Feinstein said.

"This year we're ready if more people come than last year; [we] got 500 hot dogs," she said.
