UPUA to take action as committees merge

UPUA will consider a variety of actions at its meeting tonight, including constitutional changes pertaining to the group's merger with the Student Organization Conduct Committee (SOCC) and the creation of a Recreational and Intramural Sports Commission.

The former members of SOCC will be voted upon as arbitrators for the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) Board of Arbitra-

tion, which was originally designed to address internal UPUA issues.

The former co-chairpersons of SOCC, Josh Peles and Katie Smelas, are set to become the Heads of the Board of Arbitration, UPUA President Gavin Keirans said. Six others will potentially be voted onto the Board of Arbitration.

Ralph Crivello, chairman of the student assembly, said there would be several constitutional amendments pertaining to SOCC's joining with UPUA, particularly the Board of Arbitration taking on SOCC's former role of enforcing the student code of conduct for student organizations.

He explained the adjustments of the constitution are necessary as the Board of Arbitration takes on responsibilities it wasn't originally given.

"When [the Board of Arbitration] was first created, it was intended for more internal purposes," Crivello said. "Now as the focus is growing, with SOCC coming in, SOCC recommended that we increase the number [of arbitrators from seven] to nine."

The assembly will also consider a variety of executive appointments. UPUA will vote on appointing Crivello as a voting member of the Student Activity Fee Board.

Crivello's appointment will fill the upcoming absence of Treasurer Matt Sheroff, who currently represents UPUA as its voting member, Keirans said. Sheroff will be traveling abroad during the spring semester.

Keirans' project, the Recreational and Intramural Sports Commission, may be ready after several months of negotiations and construction.

"It's the first commission of its kind," Keirans said.

He explained its purpose as a board to examine issues with recreational and intramural sports from the perspective of students who use the services. Keirans added the commission would also involve the administrators who are responsible for those departments.

UPUA is also set to approve the use of $5,000 for next semester's pilot program of the Tenant-Landlord Media-tion Center. The money comes from the emergency funding UPUA re-ceived from Student Affairs last month, and was allocated specifically for the Tenant-Landlord Mediation Center.

The assembly will also vote on its budget for the spring semester.

"It's pretty specific in that it calls for the delegation of funds to different committees and different executive departments," Keirans said. "It will allow for greater efficiency within UPUA."
