Lions named to first-team all-Big Ten

Before the start of this season, Daryll Clark said he was anxious, yet at the same time nervous to see how he would perform during his first campaign as Penn State's starting quarterback.

Four months, 11 wins, 2,584 total yards, 26 touchdowns and a Big Ten championship later, Clark has been voted the top quarterback in the Big Ten by both the coaches and the media.

"It feels real good man, a lot of the hard work really paid off this year and we were able to play very well down the stretch," Clark said. "A lot of it's a blessing, to be able to finish out the way I did was really special."

Nine other Nittany Lions joined Clark on the first team all-Big Ten team. Four other Penn Staters landed on the second team. The 10 first-teamers and 14 overall selections were both school records.

Among those picks was center A.Q. Shipley, who was also named the conference's offensive lineman of the year.

It was the first time a Lion picked up the award and Shipley said the honor has added meaning because of the Big Ten's tradition of power running games behind massive lines.

"I was ecstatic, it meant everything in the world," Shipley told the Big Ten Network. "So many great linemen that come from the Big Ten every year, to be put at the top of that list meant everything."

Shipley was joined along the first-team line by guard Rich Ohrnberger and tackle Gerald Cadogan. Guard Stefen Wisniewski was named to the second team and tackle Dennis Landolt was an honorable mention.

All five Lion offensive linemen were recognized by the Big Ten, which, according to Clark, is a main reason why Penn State's offense was so successful this season. He said it's easy to play with the comfort he has in the pocket.

"Those guys did a very good job all year of keeping defenses off me and making running lanes for our good running backs," Clark said. "They come to work every day and they laugh and joke, but they know when it's time to work. They're leaders, every one of them and they deserve everything that they've gotten."

Despite not being on the sideline for the season's final seven games, Joe Paterno also collected the third Dave McClain Coach of the Year award of his career.

Clark said he knew Paterno would have another great year, adding Paterno is more involved with the team than most people assume. Clark said while Paterno does give a lot of responsibility to his coaching staff, he's not a figurehead. No matter what decision has to be made, Paterno has the final say.

"Joe could've sat down and said 'Maybe it's time for me to sit down,' but he didn't do that, he's not like that. He's motivated, he's a worker, he's a leader," Clark said. "I congratulate Joe on everything. I knew it was gonna come with the team that we have. You just gotta love playing for Joe."

Clark, Shipley, Ohrnberger and Cadogan were joined on the first team offense by receiver Derrick Wiliams and kicker Kevin Kelly. Linebacker Navorro Bowman, defensive end Aaron Maybin, defensive tackle Jared Odrick and safety Anthony Scirrotto were named to the first team defense.

Receiver Deon Butler, running back Evan Royster and cornerback Lydell Sargeant rounded out the Lions' second team selections.

The 10 first-team selections and 14 overall honorees were, according to Clark, representative of the Lions' talent and work ethic.

"We had a group of guys that came to work every day and it showed every time we stepped out on that football field," Clark said. "There was no doubt in my mind that we had a lot of talented guys on this team and the wins proved it. I'm proud of all of them."
