Tonight is the last chance of the semester to catch Penn State jazz bands Inner and Outer Dimensions in concert.
The performance will take place at 8 p.m. in Esber Recital Hall in Music Building I. Concert-goers can expect to hear a wide range of jazz styles at the concert, said professor Dan Yoder, director of jazz studies for the School of Music. There will also be some big band swing, Latin and fusion, Yoder said.
Yoder said Inner Dimensions is made up of both undergraduate and graduate students.
He added the group will probably play both Latin and swing styles in tonight's show.
Outer Dimensions will play some Duke Ellington and Count Basie charts, such as Basie's "Shiny Stockings," said Charlie Heim (graduate-music education), Outer Dimensions' band director.
An arrangement of "Birdland" by Weather Report and Thad Jones' "Us," will also be performed by Outer Dimensions, Heim said.
"We'll mostly be playing old standard stuff," Heim said.
Heim is new to Penn State this semester. Upon graduating from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, he chose to enter Penn State's graduate program in music education.
"Working with Dan [Yoder] is great," Heim said. "It's a rare experience to work with a collegiate director who has given us great arrangements and original pieces."
Outer Dimensions practices more than two hours a week and spent four to five weeks preparing for the concert, Heim said. Rehearsals are mostly just about showing up and being prepared to work, he added.
There is a great deal of learning on the part of the band members in preparing for the concert, Yoder said. The difference between college and professional bands is the amount of time it takes to prepare and the overall quality of the soloists, he said.
"We expect a mixed bag between older community members and younger students," Yoder said of the audience for tonight's concert. Even some high school students usually attend, Heim added.
