Holiday films to kick off '25 Days of Christmas' marathon

Sales at the mall and shoveling snow may be signals of the oncoming holiday season, but some traditions don't require moving from your couch.

Wendy Cohen (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) said the greatest part about the holidays is being able to curl up with her family and watch programs on ABC Family's "25 Days of Christmas" during winter break.

"It really takes you back to your childhood and reminds you what the holidays are all about," she said.

Starting tonight, ABC Family will kick off its 11th annual "25 Days of Christmas" television special. The programming event will feature at least one Christmas-themed movie per night to count down the remaining 25 days until Christmas.

A set of Dr. Seuss movies will start the first night of the 25-day series. The lineup begins at 7 p.m. with Dr. Seuss on the Loose. It continues at 7:30 p.m with Dr. Seuss' The Hoober-Bloob Highway and finishes at 8 p.m. with How the Grinch Stole Christmas, according to the ABC Family Web site.

President of ABC Family Paul Lee said viewers love the nostalgia of the television event and that's what makes it so popular.

"Our goal was to build '25 Days of Christmas' into a franchise for the network that resonates with our millennial viewers," Lee said. "It's been such a great ride building one of the biggest events on cable."

Lee said the television countdown is truly beloved to its viewers, and the ratings show it.

"We were so proud to see last year not just our highest rated '25 Days' ever, but also the highest rated telecast in the history of the network," Lee said. "This year promises to be even better."

According to the ABC Family Web site, this years' featured films will include The Polar Express, Frosty's Winter Wonderland and Richie Rich's Christmas Wish.

For those who crave the older classics, The Year Without a Santa Claus, Rudolph's Shiny New Year and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, are considered staples for the ABC Family televised tradition, according to an ABC Family press release.

"My family always watches Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys," Kevin Reeder (freshman-biology) said of the movie that will be shown at 9 p.m. Dec. 11.

ABC Family will also be premiering its first-ever original animated Christmas special, A Miser Brother's Christmas, which stars the Heat Miser and Snow Miser from the Christmas film The Year Without a Santa Claus.
