Wrestlers drop opening two matches for first time in nine years

For the first time in nine years, the Nittany Lions are 0-2.

The No. 14 Penn State wrestling team dropped its second consecutive match of the season, falling to No. 4 Cornell, 24-10 Friday night in Ithaca, NY. This is the first time the Lions have dropped their first two dual matches in a season since the 1999-2000 season.

After an opening major win by Bubba Jenkins, the Nittany Lions (0-2) dropped six consecutive matches to the Big Red.

In the most anticipated match of the meet, No. 2-ranked Dan Vallimont dropped a very competitive match to No. 5 Jordan Leen at the 157-pound weight class, 4-0. Vallimont is now 1-4 in his career against Leen.

Redshirt freshman Frank Molinaro pulled off a huge upset at the 141-pound weight class, defeating returning All-American Mike Grey, 8-3 in the last match of the night. Molinaro got a takedown and added two back points in a move with 10 seconds left in the second period to propel himself to the victory.

The Lions travel to Binghamton, NY for the Sprawl and Brawl Duals on Sunday, where they will face No. 24 Virginia, No. 15 Edinboro and Binghamton in three separate dual matches.
